How I Built a Design System, Not Just a Design Career

Global Nikon Meetup brings photography enthusiasts together to connect, share insights, and celebrate the art of capturing moments.

Personal

Design

Audience

From Vietnam to Global Audience

Design didn’t start as a passion for me. It started as a skill.

I’m from Vietnam, and like many self-taught creatives, I began by learning tools trying to understand how visuals work, how to make things look “better,” and how design can influence emotions.

At some point, I also studied the Graphic Design Specialization from CalArts. It gave me a foundation in design thinking. But honestly, most of my growth didn’t come from courses.

It came from doing.

From experimenting every day.
From posting consistently.
From observing what works and what doesn’t.

Design Is Not Just Visual - It’s a System

Over time, my perspective changed.

I stopped seeing design as just making posters, logos, or images.
Now, I see it as a system.

A system that connects:

  • Creation

  • Content

  • Audience

  • Distribution

  • Product

Good design is not just beautiful - it works.

And when design is done really well, people don’t even notice it exists.
They just feel it.

From Posting Content to Building a Business

In the beginning, I had no business strategy.

I just posted.

But consistency changed everything.

As my audience grew, I started thinking differently:

  • Who am I creating for?

  • What value am I giving?

  • How can this connect to something bigger?

Now my system looks like this:

Content → Audience → Product

I create short-form content (especially on Instagram and Facebook), share design thinking, and connect that to:

  • Digital assets for designers

  • Art-based products for a broader audience

Content is not just content.
It’s distribution.

Inspiration

Consistency > Talent

Consistency is more important than talent.

Talent might give you a fast start.
But consistency is what builds real skill.

I don’t wait for inspiration.

Inspiration usually comes after you start working - not before.

The Real Challenge: Focus

One of my biggest challenges is not a lack of ideas.

It’s too many ideas.

As a creative person, I often want to do everything:

  • New styles

  • New content formats

  • New products

Press enter or click to view image in full size

But I’ve learned something important:

If you want to do something well, you have to go deep.

Not wide.

Focus is a skill.
And I’m still learning it.

Design Today Is More Than Design

If you’re starting today, here’s what matters:

Not just how things look.
But how they work.

You need:

  • Visual thinking

  • Storytelling

  • Understanding of platforms

  • Awareness of audience

Because design today is connected to content and distribution.

Build Your System, Not Just Your Portfolio

Many designers focus only on their portfolio.

But in today’s world, that’s not enough.

You need a system:

  • How you create

  • How you share

  • How people find you

  • How your work creates value

Start simple.

Stay consistent.

And build your system over time.

Because in the end, design is not just what you make.

It’s how everything connects.
